The boat ambulance service has been introduced to improve healthcare accessibility in flood-prone and geographically isolated areas that often remain disconnected during annual floods and adverse weather conditions.
The ambulances were inaugurated and flagged off by Derhasat Basumatary, Executive Member for Health and Family Welfare, Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), and Member of the Council Legislative Assembly (MCLA) from Salakati constituency. The programme was attended by Moon Moon Brahma, Executive Member for Urban Development, BTC and MCLA from Parbatjhora constituency, Nilu Brahma, Director of Health Services, BTC, officials of NTPC Bongaigaon, representatives of the district health department, healthcare personnel and local residents.
The project has been implemented by NTPC Bongaigaon in collaboration with the BTC government and the Directorate of Health Services, BTC. It aims to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services to people residing in the riverine belts of Khutabagra and adjoining areas.
The three boat ambulances have been deployed with an investment of Rs 20 lakh and are equipped with essential medicines and emergency medical facilities. The services will be supported by trained healthcare personnel, including medical staff and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), to provide primary healthcare services and emergency medical assistance in the remote villages.
Speaking on the occasion, Derhasat Basumatary said the initiative addresses one of the major challenges faced by people living in flood-prone riverine areas. He said the service would improve access to healthcare, particularly for pregnant women, children, elderly persons and patients requiring emergency medical attention during periods when road connectivity is disrupted.
Moon Moon Brahma said collaboration between public institutions and corporate entities plays an important role in improving living conditions in rural and riverine areas. She appreciated NTPC Bongaigaon’s contribution towards community welfare and social development in the Bodoland Territorial Region.

Nilu Brahma said the boat ambulances would function as mobile healthcare units carrying medicines, medical equipment and trained health workers to remote villages. He said the initiative would strengthen public healthcare delivery and improve outreach activities such as immunisation, maternal healthcare and treatment of common ailments in difficult-to-access locations.
NTPC Bongaigaon officials said healthcare remains one of the company’s key CSR focus areas. They stated that the boat ambulances would serve as a critical support system during floods by facilitating emergency medical transportation and ensuring delivery of routine healthcare services throughout the year.
